Villas

What's a villa? Dictionaries describe a villa as the country estate of a wealthy person. There are many such places in Italy, especially in Tuscany. Today they're being used in a variety of ways.

Some villas are set up as country hotels. There will be a management team, breakfast served, daily housekeeping, and perhaps a restaurant for lunch and dinner. In other words, you're treated as a guest, and there are people to serve you and advise you about local sightseeing, restaurants and wineries. Many of the very nicest country estates, including restored castles, have been taken for villa hotels. You can stay at those places on a daily basis, and you are not constrained to staying on particular days of the week. So you can stay at two or more locations during your Tuscany trip.

But practically speaking, when you hear the term villa or see it on a website, it usually means a 7-night stay, always from Saturday to Saturday, in a country dwelling where you are entirely on your own. That is, there is no housekeeping, no breakfast served, no restaurant, and no one to help or advise you in any way. It's really do-it-yourself Italy.

There are many companies that offer long lists of the 7-night, on-your-own villas and which will assume that you understand what you're getting into. They will not advise you of the pitfalls and possible drawbacks. If you know enough about those villa stays to be sure that you want one, we suggest going to one of the big suppliers to start sorting through the bewildering variety of villa options. Be prepared to spend a lot of time researching the choices and the rental terms, and be sure to study the geography enough to understand where your villa must be located to serve your objectives. Choosing the right villa in the right place is a very big decision.

If your main objective is experiencing Tuscany, and if it's important to you to get it right, then a do-it-yourself villa stay may or may not be the answer. Read first about the pitfalls and possible drawbacks.
