A Week in the Heart of Switzerland ~ Here's the best way we can think to spend one week in Switzerland. Fly into Zurich and meet your driver for the private transfer to Lucerne for three nights in your hotel. Lucerne is the immensely appealing old town nestled along a river crossed by those old wooden bridges you've surely seen in travel pictures. Look out from Lucerne to magnificent views of lake and mountains. Visit Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, and ride a boat on Lake Lucerne. Our tips will tell you how. Stroll the old town of Lucerne. Eat at one of the restaurants overlooking the river and Lucerne's famous covered bridges. Then board your train -- the first leg of Switzerland's Golden Pass Line -- to Interlaken, the jumping off place for Switzerland's best collection of mountain journeys. At Interlaken you'll change trains and head up the spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley to Wengen, perched high on the side of the valley and looking up to majestic peaks including the Jungfrau and the Eiger. We'll tell you about the many choices for daytrips to mountaintops and mountain villages. Your Swiss Pass allows you to ride the trains between towns and villages as often as you like. And for the final ascents to the mountaintops by gondola or rack railway, the Swiss Pass provides significant discounts. Visit your choices of the Jungfraujoch, the Schilthorn, Schynige Platte, Gimmelwald, Murren, and more. You can talk to someone here who's made those trips, and our tips will tell you more about them.

After your three nights in hotel at Wengen, you'll take the train back down the valley to Interlaken to pick up the Golden Pass Line again, this time heading west and south towards Lake Leman. This is another wonderful train ride, especially as the narrow guage train switchbacks down the mountain to the lake, at Montreux. You might want to make a stop near Montreux to visit one of the icons of Swiss tourism, Chillon Castle. Then complete your journey by train along the shore of Lake Leman to Geneva to spend your final night before flying home. Your Geneva hotel is near the lakefront and the old town for a great finish to this Swiss adventure.

Rome, Florence & Venice ~ with More Time ~ Here's the basic structure for a great 10-night trip in Italy, from Rome to Venice. You get the hotels and the trains. But coming from us, that counts for a lot, and it's more than just the basics, first because we start with an itinerary that we've tested and know works well. Just as importantly, we know those hotels, what they're like, and where they're located, which is always right in the center of each city. And we do our best to pick hotels that fit what we know about you, our client. Your trains are the fastest ones, always in first class with seat reservations. And we plan for specific trains that come as close as we can get to the schedule you want. And we include the most important private transfer, the one in Venice from the train station to the hotel, because otherwise, it can be hard to find your hotel in Venice. But there's more. You'll also get our extensive set of tips about how to travel and what we recommend seeing, always based on our own experience, so we can answer your questions better, because we've been there.

Note: more than for our other packages, this one depends on availability of rooms in a very limited set of hotels. Please be sure to check with us prior to making flight arrangements.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This particular package is designed for people who wish to manage their own sightseeing in the cities in Italy and who do not need city guides or city sightseeing tours built into the price. However, we will still provide our sightseeing tips and our assistance with museum reservations as well as access to us by telephone for our advice in planning for what to see. If you wish to consider adding sightseeing tours or private guides in the cities, please let us know, in which case we will ask you for a new budget limit -- over and above the package price -- to include the added services.

A Week at Sorrento & Positano ~ If you've been to Rome, Florence and Venice and want this trip to focus on a different kind of Italy, here's the plan for you. 3 nights at Positano and 3 nights at Sorrento give you enough time to do this area the right way, without sacrificing opporunities to relax for chances to explore your way around on great daytrips. You get hotels in each location with rooms that have seaview and balcony. From Sorrento you can visit Capri or Ischia on your own by boat. And for Pompeii, we've included a full-day excursion with private driver. You can add Mt. Vesuvius, and you can substitute Herculaneum for Pompeii or Vesuvius. From Positano you'll get a full-day private drive along the Amalfi Coast. Longer trips to Paestum or Caserta can be arranged as options. This package works best with flights into and out of the airport at Naples. Or fly into Naples, and when you're finished at Positano and Sorrento, you can head north for added time at Rome, Florence or Venice and fly back from one of those airports.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around.

Chianti Cooking Week ~ This itinerary involves a car rental, so that you will be driving yourself in Tuscany. This is unlike our other packages, most of which include private tours and transfers with a professional driver who brings a vehicle, so that you do not need to drive yourself. However, this plan does come with one day of a private driver-guide, who will get you oriented and take you around to places you might not find on your own.

You start by flying into the airport at Florence, where you pick up your vehicle. Then you drive to your lodging for 5 nights in the town of Radda, in the Chianti area. On your first full day, you'll get your private Tuscany tour. Your driver-guide will come to meet you at the Radda hotel to take you for a full day through the Chianti area. This is an excellent opportunity to focus on Chianti Classico wineries, if you wish.

Your cooking class is held in a rustic Tuscan kitchen in a private home, in a small village located a short drive from Radda. There will be 3 days of cooking classes, held each day from mid-morning until early afternoon, during which time you will learn to prepare complete meals and then have lunch, with wine, on the foods you have prepared.

Then you drive back to the airport in Florence to drop your car. This package includes a final night in Florence, so that you can be well-located for getting to the airport for your departure flight. If you prefer, you can swap the night in Florence for an extra night in the Chianti location. However, for that to be practical, your flight departure time from Florence cannot be too early, since you will need plenty of time to drive to the airport and also to drop your rented car. It is always our recommendation to spend the final night at a hotel within the city of Florence, since rush-hour traffic around the city can make it very difficult to get to the airport for a morning departure.

Note: packages with cooking classes require a minimum of two participants.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This plan is designed for people who want the freedom of having a rented car to drive in Tuscany and who are ready for the challenges of driving and navigating in a foreign country.

Serious Tuscany from Rome ~ Most people use Rome as a gateway to Tuscany, flying into Rome's Fiumicino airport. That usually means spending your first night or two in Rome, then heading on by train to Tuscany. This itinerary is set up that way, with the first 2 nights in Rome, then 4 nights in Tuscany, and one night at the finish in Florence so that you can fly home from the Florence airport. If instead you would like to fly home from Rome, let us know so we can revise the itinerary (extra cost) to get you back to Rome at the finish. You can also add more nights in either Rome or Florence. But the maine emphasis of this itnerary is Tuscany.

In fact, you'll have a big look at Tuscany in this one-week plan, getting private tours and staying in some of the most popular towns in the two most characteristic parts of Tuscany. You start in Rome with 2 nights, enough time for an introduction to the city on a first trip, or to visit parts of Rome you may have missed on an earlier trip. Either way, we'll be happy to suggest how to spend your Rome time.

Then you take the train to a station in Tuscany, where you'll be met by a transfer driver to complete your trip to your first Tuscany lodging, which is in the Val d'Orcia, south of Siena. You'll stay at Montepulciano or Pienza, two of our favorite Tuscany towns. Next day, your driver-guide will arrive to take you on a private tour of the Val d'Orcia, an especially picturesque part of Tuscany we call the "calendar country." It really is a private tour, just you and your guide. The following day is another private transfer, heading further north through Tuscany's unique Le Crete terrain to your second Tuscany lodging at Radda, in Chianti. This is a distinctively different area of Tuscany, but just as charming and photogenic. Your second private Tuscany tour will focus on the towns and countryside of Chianti. If you wish, there can be a winery visit, or you can spend part of the day in the city of Siena.

Then comes another private transfer, to the city of Florence for one night so you can be close to the airport. This gives you a chance to sample a few city pleasures, including museums or shopping, or simply to enjoy the big choice of restaurants in Florence. Your hotel will be right in the very center of the city.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This particular package is designed for people who want plenty of local support in Tuscany, including private drivers for transfers and tours, but who wish to manage their own sightseeing in Rome and Florence and don't need city tours built into the price. If you wish to consider adding sightseeing tours or private guides in the cities, please let us know, in which case we will ask you for a new budget limit -- over and above the package price -- to include the added services.

Tuscany with Florence & Rome ~ How do you squeeze Florence and Rome, plus a big look at Tuscany, into 6 nights in Italy? Try this. You fly into Rome for the first two nights. Then you catch the train to Chiusi, a town in Tuscany where your driver-guide will be waiting for you at the train station. You'll tour the nearby Val d'Orcia, the much-photographed "calendar country" of Tuscany, where you may recognize landscapes from books and calendars. This is our favorite part of Tuscany. Your driver will drop you off at Radda, in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine district, where you'll spend two nights in the Medieval heart of town. Next day, your private driver-guide will take you out for a full day in Chianti, including a wine tasting if you wish, or to the city of Siena, your choice. Then on to Florence, driving along the famous Chianti Wine Road, for your final two nights in Italy. Or ask us to add the fast train back to Rome and an extra night in that city so you can fly out of Rome.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This particular package is designed for people want plenty of local support in Tuscany, but who wish to manage their own sightseeing in Rome and Florence and don't need city tours built into the price.
