ItalySource LLC ~ "We've been there"

Italy Under $2,000

We've collected all of our itineraries that list for less than $2,000 per person so that you can see at a glance what you can do on a small budget... even in high season! As with all our independent travel plans, prices are quoted for one person in double occupancy, land-only (airfare not included), and for the high season in Italy, from Easter through October.

Some of these same itineraries are also offered at even lower cost in the low season, November to Easter. All plans include hotels -- always ones we know and always in great central locations. The train trips include first-class trains with seat reservations (your choice of travel times). Some itineraries include key transfers, while others come with private transfers or special private tours you won't find elsewhere in packages at this price level, such as excursions with a private driver in Tuscany and private tours of the Vatican Museums and the Uffizi Gallery.

Positano & Rome ~ Here's how to combine a relaxing stay on the Amalfi Coast with all the culture and excitement of Rome in just a week. You fly into Naples and meet your private transfer for the drive to Positano. You'll get 3 nights in a seaview room with balcony right in the center of Positano. We suggest riding the boats along the Amalfi Coast and over to the Isle of Capri. But if you wish, you can just lounge around Positano. Then you'll meet your transfer driver again for the ride to the train station at Naples, where you catch the train to Rome. In less than 2 hours, the fast train will get you to the Rome station. You'll catch a taxi for the short ride to your hotel, which is located right in the city center. Three nights in Rome will give you time to visit the most popular parts of the city. Our tips will give you plenty of ideas, and we can add any services you might want such as a Vatican tour (extra cost).

Yes, you can substitute Sorrento for Positano.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This package is also designed for people who do not need guides or sightseeing tours built into the price. We will provide our sightseeing tips as well as access to us by telephone for our advice in planning for what to see.

Cinque Terre + Lucca & Florence + Tuscany Private Tour ~ This is our shortest and most economical package with the Cinque Terre. There's always the question of what airports to use and what other destinations to combine with the Cinque Terre, which is not located along any popular routes to other places in Italy. To get a short and practical itinerary with the Cinque Terre, we decided to start with a flight into either one of two airports (your choice) in Tuscany, and a first night spent at the popular city of Lucca. You can fly into Pisa (PSA) or Florence (FLR). At the airport, you'll be met by your private transfer driver for the trip to Lucca, which will take approximately one hour. Your Lucca hotel will be within the walls of the very appealing old town.

Next day, you'll go by train to Monterosso, on the Cinque Terre. Note that we only use hotels that are actually in the Cinque Terre. There are so few rooms available in this area, compared to the high level of interest, that some other travel companies would place you in hotels outside the Cinque Terre, in communities to the north or south. Also because of there being so few rooms, we urge you to plan a Cinque Terre trip as far ahead as possible, because the little hotels fill up well in advance. You'll have 3 nights at Monterosso, which gives you plenty of time to explore the 5 villages as well as to take a boat trip along the coast down to Portovenere, the next town to the south outside the Cinque Terre.

Then you'll go by train again back into Tuscany, this time going all the way to Florence for 2 nights. The Florence stay not only puts you near an airport for flying out, but it also provides the opportunity to include a private Tuscany tour, to the south of Florence into the Chianti countryside. It's just you and your driver-guide for Tuscany, so you control the pace and the emphasis. The tour can include a Chianti winery if you so choose.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This package is for people who are willing to manage their own time on the Cinque Terre, where riding the trains requires close attention to the departure and arrival schedules. This package is also designed for people who do not need city guides or sightseeing tours built into the price. We will provide our sightseeing tips as well as access to us by telephone for our advice in planning for what to see.

BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE! Due to the nature of this package, which uses very small hotels on the Cinque Terre, we need plenty of lead time to put it together. Be sure to check with us for availability prior to purchasing your flights.

Cinque Terre + Rome & Florence + Tuscany Private Tour ~ Most people fly into Rome for trips to the Cinque Terre. It isn't that Rome is convenient to the Cinque Terre, but it does have one of the two major airports -- along with Milan -- that's easiest to line up in flight schedules to Italy. If you're interested in spending some time in Rome, this plan works well. You start with 2 nights in Rome, though we can add as much Rome time as you want. Then you board a train for a journey of about 4.5 hours, mostly along the coast of Tuscany, to Monterosso, the largest of the 5 Cinque Terre villages, where most of the accommodations are located. In the course of your 3 days and nights at Monterosso, you can handily explore this area, using trains to get between the various communities. We also recommend taking the boats, for views you can only get from the water, and for the opportunity to visit Portovenere, another popular destination that is just beyond the Cinque Terre to the south.

After your 3 nights at Monterosso, you'll go by train back into Tuscany, this time going to Florence for your final 2 nights in Italy. The Florence stay provides an exit point for your Cinque Terre trip, near an airport for flying out of Italy. It also provides the opporunity to include our most popular service, a private Tuscany tour, taken from Florence south into the Chianti countryside.

Florence & Rome with Private Vatican & Uffizi Tours ~ Expanding our "Florence & Rome Essential" itinerary, in addition to first-class hotels in great locations and the fast train between Rome and Florence, we add the convenience of all 4 private transfers. Then you get something really special: a full half day (4 hours) with your own private guide for a walking tour in each city. This is our only package under $2000 with private guides in the cities. It's your choice what you do with the guide time. In Rome, we suggest going to the Vatican with your guide. We'll set that up with a reserved entrance so that you don't stand in the big line. In Florence, your guide can give you a private tour of the Uffizi Gallery, with a reserved entrance time. Or you can choose something else for your guide time, such as the Pitti Palace (our favorite in Florence).
