QUICK ANSWERS....

  • We offer combinations of a Mediterranean cruise plus independent (no group!) land travel in Italy, Paris or Switzerland
  • Italy cruising home ports are Rome, Venice, and Savona (Riviera, near Genoa)
  • France has a home port at Nice, so you can combine a cruise from Nice with a Paris stay
  • The Mediterranean cruise season is now year-round (it was formerly May to November)
  • Cruises are available from ports in Italy and France to the Western Mediterranean (France, Italy, Spain, North Africa) and the Eastern Mediterranean (Athens, Greek Isles, Croatia, Turkey, and Italy)
  • Cruise durations are available for as little as 4 nights and as much as 2 weeks
  • Combination packages of a cruise plus land travel can be done for as little as 10 total travel days
  • You can purchase your air tickets separately or as offered by the cruise company
  • Most cruise lines now offer cruises in the Mediterranean
  • We can match up your requirements for a cruise itinerary, cruise line, length of trip, and travel on land and provide a quote for the total cost
  • You can get a cruise from us even if there is no land travel associated with the cruise.
  • If you already have a cruise booked, it may be possible to book an associated land trip with us. However, the combined price of a cruise and a land trip is likely to be lower if we are also booking the cruise for you.

Why ItalySource sells cruises

We sell combinations of a cruise plus land travel in Italy. That only makes sense. Italy is in the middle of the Mediterranean with major seaports for cruise ships at Rome, Venice, and Savona (near Genoa). From Italy, you can sail around the western Mediterranean to ports in France, Spain and North Africa. Or you can sail the eastern Mediterranean, to Athens, the Greek Isles, Turkey, and the Holy Land. And in the middle of all that, you have Italy itself, one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Who wants to travel to Italy to take a cruise without spending some additional time on land in Italy?
So we put them together, the cruise and the land trip. The land travel part can be short, such as a few extra days in Rome or Venice. But usually it's more involved and includes travel somewhere in Italy, such as to Tuscany or the Cinque Terre, or the Amalfi Coast. Or it could be that unbeatable combination of Rome, Florence and Venice, by train, that fits so well with one of the many cruises that depart from the ports of Rome and Venice.

Planning a cruise in the Caribbean is one thing. Planning a cruise in the Mediterranean, plus travel in Italy, that's another matter, because there's more to think about, more to plan, and more money at stake in getting it right. There are lots of web sites that offer cruises, and lots of agents who specialize in selling cruises, and they are all geared to making quick sales and moving on. If they include a hotel onshore, it's unlikely they know anything about it or even where it is.

But that's not how we do things here. A cruise agent would revolt at the time and energy required for planning land travel in Italy. So when it comes to working out your Mediterranean cruise plans and your time in Italy, who do you want on your side, a cruise agent who can't wait to get on to the next quick sale, and who may know little or nothing about Italy, or the staff at ItalySource?

How to get a cruise + land trip from ItalySource

Tell us what you have in mind. Is there a certain cruise line you like, or one you want to avoid? Do you want a certain size of ship? What is your preference for location on the ship? Or maybe what matters to you most is the itinerary, as to which ports the ship will visit, or how long the cruise is. Then there's the matter of where you want to spend time in Italy.

You probably want a cruise that departs, or arrives, at a certain city, such as Venice or Rome or Savona, so it fits well with your trip in Italy. And of course, there's the question of what you want to budget for this trip. Send us an email, or give us a call. It won't be like contacting a cruise agency, where they will make a few keystrokes to get you a quick answer, but that's why you're coming to us.

Best Cruise + Italy Combinations

The most popular combination we know is a cruise plus Tuscany. You take a cruise from the port of Rome, for a week or more, to some combination of the Greek Isles, Athens, and maybe Turkey. Upon your return to Rome, you travel independently to Tuscany, which is less than an hour and a half by train from Rome. The flight plan is easy. You fly in and out of Rome. And the bonus is having some time in Rome.

Then there's that tried and true combination of a cruise plus a train trip between Rome, Florence and Venice. You can cruise from Rome in either direction, west to France and Spain, or east to Athens and the Greek Isles. Or you can fly into Venice, cruise to the Greek Isles, or even all the way to Istanbul in a one-week cruise, then return to Venice and board your train for Florence, then Rome.

If you've been to Rome, Florence and Venice, or if you want something different than a city trip, you can use an Italian cruise port that's on the Riviera. Italy's port at Savona is just west of Genoa, not far from popular seaside destinations on the Eastern Italian Riviera, so you can combine a cruise from Savona with a land trip to the Portofino area and the Cinque Terre coast, or extend that to Tuscany.

Cruises from Rome fit really well with a visit to the Bay of Naples area, including Sorrento, Pompeii, the Isle of Capri, and Positano, on the Amalfi Coast. In fact, the best honeymoon cruise-tour we can imagine is the combination of a cruise from Rome to Santorini and Mykonos, in the Greek Isles, plus a stay in Positano with a daytrip to Capri, and of course, Rome itself.

As a port city, there is none in Europe more popular than Venice. In addition to working so efficiently in combination with a trip across Italy, from Rome and Florence, cruises from Venice also combine well with trips to destinations in northern Italy, with Lake Como being especially popular. You can also work out a combination of Switzerland, Lake Como, and Venice, with a cruise from Venice.
