Cinque Terre &
the Eastern Italian Riviera

The city of Genoa splits the region of Liguria, popularly known as the Italian Riviera, into two parts. The western half, or Riviera di Ponente, extends to the French border and includes San Remo. The eastern half, or Riviera di Levante, extends to the border with Tuscany and includes Portofino and the Cinque Terre. Our Riviera packages are all focused on the eastern portion. Come for postcard views of jetset Portofino, the more typical seaside towns of Camogli, Santa Margherita and Sestri Levante, or the rugged simplicity of the Cinque Terre fishing villages.

Cinque Terre + Lucca & Florence + Tuscany Private Tour ~ This is our shortest and most economical package with the Cinque Terre. There's always the question of what airports to use and what other destinations to combine with the Cinque Terre, which is not located along any popular routes to other places in Italy. To get a short and practical itinerary with the Cinque Terre, we decided to start with a flight into either one of two airports (your choice) in Tuscany, and a first night spent at the popular city of Lucca. You can fly into Pisa (PSA) or Florence (FLR). At the airport, you'll be met by your private transfer driver for the trip to Lucca, which will take approximately one hour. Your Lucca hotel will be within the walls of the very appealing old town.

Next day, you'll go by train to Monterosso, on the Cinque Terre. Note that we only use hotels that are actually in the Cinque Terre. There are so few rooms available in this area, compared to the high level of interest, that some other travel companies would place you in hotels outside the Cinque Terre, in communities to the north or south. Also because of there being so few rooms, we urge you to plan a Cinque Terre trip as far ahead as possible, because the little hotels fill up well in advance. You'll have three nights at Monterosso, which gives you plenty of time to explore the 5 villages as well as to take a boat trip along the coast down to Portovenere, the next town to the south outside the Cinque Terre.

Then you'll go by train again back into Tuscany, this time going all the way to Florence for 2 nights. The Florence stay not only puts you near an airport for flying out, but it also provides the opportunity to include a private Tuscany tour, to the south of Florence into the Chianti countryside. It's just you and your driver-guide for Tuscany, so you control the pace and the emphasis. The tour can include a Chianti winery if you so choose.

This is independent travel. This package is for people who are willing to manage their own time on the Cinque Terre, where riding the trains requires close attention to the departure and arrival schedules. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. We will provide our sightseeing tips as well as access to us by telephone for our advice in planning for what to see.

BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE! Due to the nature of this package, which uses very small hotels on the Cinque Terre, we need plenty of lead time to put it together. Be sure to check with us for availability prior to purchasing your flights.

Cinque Terre + Rome & Florence + Tuscany Private Tour ~ Most people fly into Rome for trips to the Cinque Terre. It isn't that Rome is convenient to the Cinque Terre, but it does have one of the two major airports -- along with Milan -- that's easiest to line up in flight schedules to Italy. If you're interested in spending some time in Rome, this plan works well. You start with 2 nights in Rome, though we can add as much Rome time as you want. Then you board a train for a journey of about 4.5 hours, mostly along the coast of Tuscany, to Monterosso, the largest of the 5 Cinque Terre villages, where most of the accommodations are located. In the course of your 3 days and nights at Monterosso, you can handily explore this area, using trains to get between the various communities. We also recommend taking the boats, for views you can only get from the water, and for the opportunity to visit Portovenere, another popular destination that is just beyond the Cinque Terre to the south.

After your 3 nights at Monterosso, you'll go by train back into Tuscany, this time going to Florence for your final 2 nights in Italy. The Florence stay provides an exit point for your Cinque Terre trip, near an airport for flying out of Italy. It also provides the opporunity to include our most popular service, a private Tuscany tour, taken from Florence south into the Chianti countryside. It's just you and your driver-guide for Tuscany, so you control the pace and the emphasis. The tour can include a Chianti winery if you so choose.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This package is for people who are willing to manage their own time on the Cinque Terre, where riding the trains requires close attention to the departure and arrival schedules. This package is also designed for people who do not need city guides or sightseeing tours built into the price.

Then you'll travel by train to the Cinque Terre coast of the Italian Riviera. Your hotel is in the picturesque old town of Monterosso. From there, you can take boats or trains to any of the other Cinque Terre towns. Tuscany & Riviera with the Cinque Terre ~ One of the most popular combinations in Italy, especially if you've already visited Rome and Venice. No car needed. You start by flying into Genoa for 6 nights on the Eastern Italian Riviera. Your first night is in the fascinating city of Genoa. You'll wonder why you haven't heard more about Genoa's palaces, Medieval quarter, and lively seaport area with its excellent aquarium. Then take a short train ride to the wonderful town of Camogli, near Portofino. Camogli is a great base for exploring the upper Riviera coast between Genoa and the Cinque Terre, where you'll find not only Portofino but Santa Margherita, Rapallo and San Fruttuoso. From Camogli, another short train ride gets you to Monterosso, on the Cinque Terre coast. You can explore all the 5 quaint fishing villages, using trains, boats or the hiking trails.

After Monterosso, you'll head by train to one of Tuscany's most appealing places, Lucca, where your hotel for 2 nights is inside the walls of the old town. From Lucca, take another train to Florence, where you'll be met at the station by a private driver, who will take you on to central Tuscany for 3 nights at either Radda, the best of the Chianti towns, or the city of Siena. From your base there, you will get 2 full days of touring with your private driver-guide. Choose your own emphasis -- wineries, villages, scenery. You get the comfort and relaxation of never needing to drive or navigate or park a car, and your guide is a local person who knows all the best possibilities. This is THE package for anyone who wants to experience Tuscany but do it without renting a car. Finally, you'll be transferred to Florence, to spend your last night in hotel so you can be near the Florence airport. As with all of our packages, we'll provide tips based on our own travel experience in all these areas, and the hotels will be ones we know from our own inspections.

This is independent travel. You will not be with a group, and you will not have a tour director leading you around. This package is for people who are willing to manage their own time on the Riviera, where riding the trains requires close attention to the departure and arrival schedules, but who want the benefit of private drivers and guides for the Tuscany segment.

BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE! Due to the nature of this package, which uses very small hotels on the Riviera and in Tuscany, we need plenty of lead time to put it together. Be sure to check with us for availability prior to purchasing your flights. It is generally not practical to book this trip within 4 months of your departure.
